on xmas eve we had a wonderful mass at church of the apostles, a 'polyphonic spree' for the birth of the Christ child. the liturgy was infused with trad. carols as well as modern music from the polyphonic spree.
i love the spree, as their music has the character of 'play' which to me reflects a 'natural' resonance to grace, as grace (hidden and revealed) has the power to sing light into a world transfixed by darkness.
for some, spree songs are church music for the 'spiritual but not religious.' perhaps, but some of their songs can also be music for the 'spiritual and religious' as well.
if you are not familiar with the spree, read this review (linked below) of one of their concerts. like U2's elevation tour, most church events can still aspire to stir the faithful as much as these 'concerts' have stirred many of the faithful and many more of those in search of faith. - read the spree concert review here.
our christmas eve eucharistic prayer at apostles was joined to the song 'section 17' (suitcase calling) by the spree. -

the music (sung by our new apostles choir within the prayer) was lovely, joyous and luminous, and helped our celebration to be a 'spree of light shining from the face of the newborn Christ.' below are the rubrics and wording.
Preparation of the Gifts: piano and trombone intro, then female voice enters with ooos. male voice comes in with “Entirely for you, soon you will see that there’s more there to me I will show. Entirely for you, soon you will see that there’s more there to me I will show.” Choir comes in with ooos.
Eucharistic Prayer
Priest: “This child will soon become a man, and show us that there is much, much more to him than we ever could have imagined. He will ask his closest friends, “who do you think I am?” and the Holy Spirit will enable them to see and to say, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
God’s Son, who came entirely for you, will dwell among us and show us that there is much, much more to him than we ever could have imagined. He will say to his friends, “Take this bread and eat it. It’s me given entirely for you. Take this wine and drink it. It’s me, given entirely for you.” and then he will do exactly that; he will give himself for the redemption of the world. He will give himself over to death. But death, although it is strong enough to bury us, was powerless to hold such a gift of love from the God of the universe, before whom the gates of hell were torn wide open, raising us to life which is eternal. Christ, we cradle these precious gifts of bread and wine in our fragile hands. Send your spirit upon them that you might find room in us, that we might be swept up into the life of the community of God, Giving Father, Giving Son, Giving Spirit. Amen.”
Deacon: “Welcome to God’s table, not ours. We are merely the wait staff at this great banquet. If the Spirit of God calls you to come to this table, by all means, come. Your presence is requested. You’ll be given the bread of heaven and the cup of salvatiion. The table is ready. Come.”
Post Communion:
Priest: “In the longest of nights, in the coldest of nights, within a world of great hurt and greed need, a warm soft glow was sparked. Praise to you O Christ. Glow in our cold night till it becomes the brightest day of your eternal kingdom.”
choir comes back in: “Time to feel the softest glow, waiting for days for this night to get colder. Time to feel the softest glow, waiting for days for this night to get colder. Waiting for days for this night, for this day to glow!” (continue with last part of the song)
Communicants are given a candle after they receive Eucharist and light it from the Christ candle to hold throughout the end of service.
