-Special Events:
Tuesday, November 10th: 6-8 Prior to The Round 54, "Art, Religion and Evolution: Why
Do We Create?" A conversation with UW Affiliate Professor Ellen
Dissanayake about the evolutionary origins of art and ritual, and the
reasons that we should continue to practice them. $5 - 10 sliding scale
at the door also gets you into The Round afterwards.
An
accomplished musician and art historian with a fascinating personal
biography, Ellen Dissanayake has done ground-breaking research into
questions about how and why art arose within the history of human
evolution. She has been hailed by E.O. Wilson as "a true pioneer", and
has been credited with laying the cornerstone of a new and growing
field of scientific and aesthetic study. In this casual conversation at
the Fremont Abbey, she will present her ideas, which provide
justification and explanation for a variety of humane and humanizing
artistic practices, from religious ritual to popular art, and provide
hope and encouragement for those who have faced questions about the
value of art for society
